Simon Knowles

Simon is responsible for all aspects of silicon chip design and execution at Icera Inc, and is the architect of Icera’s new processor technology. He is a member of the Board of Directors and a founder of the company.
Prior to Icera, Simon Knowles co-founded and served as Vice President Silicon for Element 14, a wireline communications chip company acquired by Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM) for $640M in late 2000. Simon managed Element 14’s design centre in Bristol, UK, and was responsible for the design and execution of all of Element 14’s digital chips. He was the principal designer of Broadcom’s FirePath DSP processor, the highest performance DSP processor in production today. Prior to co-founding Element 14 in early 1999, Simon led the high-end microprocessor design group of STMicroelectronics (NASDAQ: STM), formerly the Inmos processor design centre in Bristol, UK. In 10 years with ST and Inmos, Simon held various engineering and management roles in the design of high-complexity digital chips and design automation tools. He was the principal designer of ST’s Chameleon media processor, the highest performance media processor of its generation and the basis of ST’s SuperH-5 joint venture with Hitachi. Simon started his career with 5 years of chip design research at the UK’s Defence Electronics Research Agency, after graduating from Cambridge University with a degree in Electrical Science. He is a Member of the IEEE.
